Scotland's North Coast 500 has become one of Europe's most talked-about road trips, and it earns the reputation — single-track roads along sea lochs, castles that appear out of nowhere, and some of the emptiest, most dramatic coastline in Europe, all within a manageable loop from Inverness.

Here's a 6-day version that covers the highlights without trying to do the full 500 miles at a rushed pace.

The route, day by day

Day 1: Inverness

Pick up your rental car and spend the afternoon in Inverness itself — small, walkable, and a good place to adjust before the driving starts. Loch Ness is a short drive south if you want the obligatory stop.

Day 2: Inverness to Applecross (via Bealach na Bà)

This is the most dramatic driving day of the trip. The Bealach na Bà pass climbs to over 600 meters with hairpin turns and views across to Skye — not a drive to rush, and not recommended in poor weather or for nervous drivers. Applecross itself is a tiny, remote village with a well-regarded seafood restaurant as your reward.

Day 3: Applecross to Ullapool

A quieter driving day along the coast, with Ullapool as a good base — a proper working fishing village rather than a tourist stop, with solid seafood and a genuine local feel.

Day 4: Ullapool to Durness

The road north takes you past some of the most remote and dramatic scenery on the route. Durness sits at the very northwest tip of mainland Scotland — Smoo Cave, a sea cave you can walk into, is worth the stop.

Day 5: Durness to John o' Groats

The northern coastal stretch, ending at John o' Groats — the traditional "end of the road" point of mainland Britain. Less dramatic than the west coast but worth it for the sense of having reached the edge of the map.

Day 6: Return to Inverness

A more direct drive back south, with time for a final stop at Dunrobin Castle if you haven't had enough castles yet.

Booking the essentials

A rental car is non-negotiable for this route — there's no realistic alternative, and the single-track roads with passing places are part of the experience, not an inconvenience. Book well ahead for June–September; the Highlands' limited accommodation supply sells out faster than the scenery suggests it should. Small guesthouses and B&Bs along the route offer far better value and local knowledge than the handful of larger hotels.

Mobile signal is genuinely patchy across large stretches of the North Coast 500, so an eSIM with a Highlands-compatible network, activated before you arrive, is worth it for the sections where you do have coverage — don't rely on finding a local SIM shop once you're out of Inverness.

When to book flights

Oslo–Inverness routes have less capacity than major city pairs, so book earlier than usual — 10–12 weeks out rather than the 6–8 week window that works for bigger destinations. If direct Inverness options are limited or expensive on your dates, compare against flying into Edinburgh and driving up; the extra 3.5 hours of driving is often worth the savings and flexibility.
